Things to see and do in Rockingham

Rockingham is a rapidly expanding regional centre 40 minutes south of Perth. The region arguably has some of the best beaches in the greater Perth area. With the stunning Shoalwater Marine Park (including Penguin and Seal Islands), unique north facing beaches of Palm Beach, Cape Peron Regional Park and the white Waikiki beaches it is a beach lovers paradise.

No holiday in Rockingham would be complete without a visit to Penguin Island. Catch a ferry, paddle or, for something different, walk across via the sandbar. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy a day at the island swimming and snorkelling in one of the magnificent and sheltered bays or take a stroll around the island. The penguin shows are also very entertaining and don't forget your fishing gear! Glass bottom boat tours offer a relaxing cruise of the bay, including Seal Island and Shag Rock.

Point Peron (Cape Peron) offers an exciting day of exploring. Visit the gun sites at Cape Peron, explore the limestone cliffs and magnificent beaches. There is great snorkelling off the beach and a cyclepath and walkway on the western side overlook Mangles Bay - Garden Island Naval Barracks. Calm sheltered beaches on the west side are great for the children. Take an extended paddle and explore the rocky islands just off the point.

Rockingham's crystal clear waters are home to over 100 Bottlenose Dolphins that have become a major international tourist attraction. Swim with the dolphins or watch from the comfort of the boat. Another way to get up close and personal with the local wildlife is by kayak. Sea Kayaking to Seal Island is one of the best sea kayaking trips anywhere. Crystal clear waters surround Shag Rock and Seal Island, jagged limestone cliffs, reefs and fish, plus magnificent swimming beaches. Snorkel with wild sea lions or maybe even the local dolphins.

Shoalwater Bay is one of Western Australia's top locations for kitesurfing, windsurfing and stand up paddleboarding. Calm mornings and afternoon summer breezes along with safe, shallow water inside the islands provide superb conditions for the professional or beginner.

Top class snorkelling and scuba diving can be found in the West Coast Dive Park. The Dive Park is rich in dive wrecks, including the Saxon Ranger, snorkel with sea lions or explore the many limestone reef formations.

Rockingham also offers cosmopolitan cafes, pubs and night clubs. The foreshore cafés offer a range of eating options, from casual to fine dining and of course great coffees. Churchill Park offers fantastic picnic sites with BBQ facilities, shady trees and playgrounds to keep the kids entertained. On weekends, in the summer months, there are often festivals and events in the Park. Check with the Visitor Information Centre for details and if you are planning your trip over the New Year we would definitely recommend the New Years Eve concert and fireworks.
